Why haven't you been here yet?

Just ate at Merkato for the first time and loved it! The menu has about 20 different Ethiopian dishes either lamb, chicken, beef, or vegetarian. Wished I could try all of them, so tasty.

Very clean restaurant with great staff. Service could be a bit slow if busy, but why be in a hurry? Order some lentil or lamb sambosas to tide you over and you will not regret it.

Wow! No reviews as of yet! Lucky me!

I have been a fan of Ethiopian food 9yrs now. When I lived in the heart of Winnipeg I would go to my favorite place a few blocks away almost every Friday to end the work week!

When that place closed I found a new amazing place, Merkato Restaurant! It turns out the owner of the last place I went to and the owner of this new found gem are sisters! Bonus!

I am a fan of Doro Tibs and Gomen
Doro Tibs - Cubed chicken breast, peppers, onions in an amazing buttery, spicy red sauce ( I honestly don't know what is in it but it's to die for)
Gomen - Sauteed Collard Greens with onions. (again, nomnomnomnomnom)

Now you can order many veggie, chicken, beef, and lamb stews to go with your INJERA - spongy, sour dough tasting crepe! I love it all! I especially love the fact that you literally tear off a piece of injera and scoop up your stew and POP! in it goes... NOMNOMNOMNOM!

The location is a little hard to get to if you are trying to park during the busy traffic times of the day. There are tables inside and you can take out, always given a little extra Injera to soak up and eat the left over sauce when you are at home.
Be aware! I order two entrees at a time, which last me two meals and that's me gorging myself twice, consecutively! The portions are huge!

The staff is incredibly friendly and always remember me and my "usual"!

If you are new to the Ethiopian cuisine experience you need to have time. It takes time for them to make the meal. Sometimes waiting up to an hour when it's busy. But that's how they roll.. Have a coffee, tea or pop and relax, cause once the food arrives your taste buds will carry you into a euphoric state of mind and you won't even care about the time of day, or night, or.....

This is such an amazing place to eat. First the food is simply incredible and what really puts it over the top is the staff are awesome and treat you like one of the family. Portion sizes are huge and so so sooooooo tasty. Will defiantly be back time and time again.
